Shibuya Archive Photo Exhibition 2026: "Streets and Voices – Shibuya's Streets and Spoken Memories"

Published Nov 4, 2026

The "Shibuya Archive Photo Exhibition 2026," organized by Commons Archive Collective (CAC) with the support of Shibuya City, will be held at 8/COURT on the 8th floor of Shibuya Hikarie. This year's fourth edition has the theme "Streets and Voices" (Shibuya's Streets and Spoken Memories). Photos from the Shibuya City digital archive "SHIBUYA CITY RECORD" and the Shirane Memorial Shibuya Local History Museum & Literature Museum collection will also be provided.

Highlights

  • Approx. 180 photos: Scenes from the Taisho, Showa, and Heisei eras that can no longer be seen today, including Shibuya Station building in the late Taisho period and photos of Seibu Shibuya Store at the time of its opening (the store closed at the end of September 2026). A QR code on each photo lets you compare it with the present-day streetscape on Google Maps Street View.
  • Oral history: Newly introduced this year. Listen to the stories of people who have lived, worked, and been active in Shibuya using the telephone receivers at the venue, and read them as Japanese and English text as well.
  • SHIBUYA TIMELINE: A chronology tracing Shibuya's history from prehistoric times to the present. Partially updated this time to also introduce changes in urban infrastructure.

Opening hours are 11:00–20:00 (until 18:00 on the final day, the 23rd). Admission is free.
